What many people don't realize is Genital warts is a sexually transmitted
infection caused by a virus; it is often more difficult to treat than
Syphilis and gonorrhea. Because genital warts and genital herpes often
have a dormancy period they can be easily spread without being aware that
you are spreading an infection to your partner. Both infections have
periods when they lie dormant and periods of flare ups. Therefore it is
important to make sure to practice safe sex by using a condom.
This
disease is usually spread through skin on skin contact, very often people
are totally unaware that they have genital warts as they are so small and
don't present any symptoms. A word of caution wearing condom does not
always guarantee that you would not be infected as genital warts can occur
in areas not covered by a condom. Women particularly could be totally
unaware they have genital warts as they are often only diagnosed when a
women goes for a check up and pap spear. Therefore is it vitally important
for a sexually active woman to have regular pap smears.
If left untreated chronic Genital Warts could lead to serious
conditions such as cervical cancer or pelvic inflammatory diseases. Being
aware of the symptoms of the disease gives you the edge not only for
yourself but also to be aware that your partner is not infected. Sexually
active men and women should be scrupulous about getting screened and go
for regular check ups.
This disease often present themselves as small raised areas, feel soft
but do not burst, they may itch or burn, but can also be painless. If you
look at them they may appear to be pink and sometimes have a cauliflower
shape. Some warts might go away without treatment, but more often then not
they require treatment to get rid of them.
Professional treatment is necessary to get rid of this disease; there
are various options to choose from: medication, surgery, burned off using
laser or electocaurtery, or frozen off, your doctor will advise you of the
best treatment.
